20-30 slides should be enough to cover 30-40 minutes. You need to rehearsal
many times before the real thing, which should give you some idea about the
length.

First round, very bad,
Second round, very good,
By the way, I got the
offer eventually. Dream offer.
First, you need select a good topic, must be good both for them and for you.
Second, determine what you want to demonstrate in the talk: problem solving?
your idea? your executtion? etc. This is the so called "theme" of your talk.
Third, you should ask them who will be audience. You should know before
going there. After you get the list of names, google them, know their
background and experience, Ph.D./Master schools, the more you know them, the
better you will position yourself. Then you can decide
how deep you should go for details.
Fourth, preparation, preparation, and preparation. Not just rehearsal in
front of friends or mirror. You need think about what questions they may ask
. Also, you should play some tricks to induce them to ask some questions you
definitely know the answer. In another word, you should anticipate what
they may ask. At the same time, you should not put on any slides or
information that will draw questions that you don't know the answer or you
feel not very confident.
Fifth, in the slides, more vivid stuffs like pictures, plots, less texts;
never read slides.
Sixth, when delivering the talk, be very engaging, keep smiling, act very
confidently and be sharp. If somebody asked a question you really don't know
the answer, and if you know that person is an expert in your field, don't
be defensive, don't beat around the bush, you can say very diplomatically
but also frankly like "to be honest, it is a really good question, I don't
know the exact answer for the time being, but here is my understanding on
this, maybe not perfectly accurate, .........". Also, be energetic, keep
very confident but not aggressive eye contact. Try to speak slowly. people
tend to speak fast when they are nervous.
The above are my thoughts in my mind for the time being. Best of luck!
