There are two things to sell: commodity and non-commodity.
For the time sake, I would like to discuss about commodity here.
Businesses are for profit, and as long as the profit is justifiable that
should be fine. For commodity (e.g., most cars in competitive market
segments), it is arrogant for dealers to wishfully think the other is
ignorant to know the fair price. It is equally arrogant for buyers to
wishfully think that a dealer is in the business for charity. The purpose
of dealer is to facilitate/help buyer to buy what s/he needs at a reasonable
price. In the long run, dealers with integrity will win (please take a
look at Bill Head, who is famous (or notorious) for high-pressure selling).
One of the many tasks for business selling commodity (regardless cars, salon
service or whatever) is to have a rapport for its customers and employees
alike. No top/star employee would work for a deemed evil company for many years yet with high productivity. While you could seem winning once by fooling an
ignorant customer (or anybody), you will lose that person and the persons s
/he knows and s/he does not know, if s/he would like to leverage with social
media.
One example is recent Spirit Airlines for Jerry Meekins' refunds. While
Spirit has 1000 legit reasons not to refund Jerry at all, what Ben Baldanza
presented was pure arrogance. I believe, although Spirit could have *saved*
$17x, but the damage or negative image the CEO presented was far greater.
It is natural people do imperfect, even wrong, things. But people (sales
person or customer alike) need respects and to be listened to their concerns
and viewpoints, to reach the final agreement (closing the deal). There are
so many similar accidents like that and many of which cost much more money
than necessary. But there are also examples after examples that problems
were solved beautifully and the sales person won back a customer and many
other customers.
It is almost certain, winners will win, in that manner.
A second task a business would do is to politely determine (as quick as
possible) who are the best customers to serve and 80/20 rule may apply here.
But this has to be done tactically and with courtesy, in both persons
comfort zones. This does require knowledge and experience, but remember, it
is for the best interest of the customer that someone else may service him
better while this sale may hurt your business. It is a win-win strategy.

You give them good advice they will reward you good business.
Unfortunately, later I realized that's not true. Most people are
