Intelligence officials have determined that Islamic extremists have explored
using the refugee program to enter the United States, the head of the House
Homeland Security Committee said on Monday.
Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas) declined to go into detail about the
determination, which the Obama administration has not announced publicly.
Yet the disclosure could give ammunition to critics of the White House’s
refugee plans who have warned that the program is vulnerable to infiltration
by adherents of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
“ISIS members in Syria have attempted to exploit it to get into the United
States,” McCaul said during a speech at the National Defense University.
“The U.S. government has information to indicate that individuals tied to
terrorist groups in Syria have already attempted to gain access to our
country through the U.S. refugee program.”
McCaul would not say specifically who informed him and other lawmakers about
the revelation, only describing the sources as “elements of the
intelligence community.”
“That was very courageous for them to come forward with this, to tell me
about this personally, given the political debate on the Hill,” he added,
suggesting that the news did not come from intelligence leaders.
The briefing happened “earlier this week,” McCaul said.

Magnitude 7.2 earthquake hits northern Japan - AP
TOKYO – A magnitude 7.2 earthquake hit northern Japan on Wednesday, shaking
buildings in Tokyo and prompting the country's meteorological agency to
issue a tsunami alert for the northeastern coast. There were no immediate
reports of damage or injuries, but officials were still assessing the
situation.
The meteorological agency said the quake hit at 11:45 a.m. local time and
was centered about 200 miles (300 kilometers) north of Tokyo at a depth of
about 6.2 miles (10 kilometers).
It warned that a tsunami of about 20 inches (50 centimeters) would hit the
coast around noon Wednesday, but that time passed without any reports of a
wave reaching shore.
There was a 6.3 magnitude aftershock shortly after the main quake, the
agency said.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was centered off the coast of
Japan, 258 miles (416 kilometes) from Tokyo and at a depth of 8.8 miles (14.
1 kilometers). The two agencies often have slightly different numbers.
