I did mention that a couple years ago. Not 前阵子though. A couple years ago, it was reported that to get in a top school on contribution base might need $1M ~ $1.5M. Duke took the price title at the time. The current price should be higher. My irresponsible wild guess for Stanford next year would be $3M~$5M, as Stanford just raised $1B last year. Your friend might need to donate about 1 year before the enrollment. The routine usually would be, 1) contact the school endowment first, negotiate the contingency. 2) set up some kind of professorship, scholarship, or fellowship. 3) be sure to put in donor info at the application, to avoid misunderstanding. Rumor said, some school board director might have special referral power to get one in without sizable donation, which I could not verify.

The place to contact is Office of Development in colleges. Therefore, such students are often refered as "development admits".
