“Carlos Ramos is one of the most experienced and respected umpires in
tennis,” the International Tennis Federation said in a statement. “Mr.
Ramos’ decisions were in accordance with the relevant rules and were re-
affirmed by the U.S. Open’s decision to fine Serena Williams for the three
offenses.”
Indeed, Williams was fined a total of $17,000 by U.S. Open tournament
officials — $10,000 for “verbal abuse” of an umpire, $4,000 for the
coaching allegation and another $3,000 for the broken racket.
