NEW YORK – DEVELOPING: Visa and MasterCard warned banks of a potential
breach at a US-based credit card processor, the Krebs on Security blog
reported Friday.
"Sources in the financial sector are calling the breach 'massive' and say it
may involve more than 10 million compromised card numbers," Krebs wrote.
Alerts were sent out to US banks late last week advising them that certain
cards may have been compromised. The affected US banks reportedly are
analyzing data transactions in a bid to track a common point of purchase.
The breach was believed to have occurred between Jan. 21 and Feb. 25.
Neither firm revealed which processor had been compromised and did not
respond to Krebs' request for comment.
In late 2008, a group of hackers breached the network of Princeton, N.J.-
based payment processing giant Heartland Payment Systems, which processed
transactions for restaurants, retailers and other merchants. Data from more
than 100 million credit and debit cards were stolen.
