Wedding bells could soon be ringing for same-sex couples in Scotland, after
the government announced today it plans to legalize marriage equality.
Scotland would become the first part of the United Kingdom to do so.
Despite major opposition from the Catholic Church and the Church of Scotland
, Scottish ministers are looking to enact the bill by 2013, meaning that
ceremonies could begin by 2015.
“We believe that in a country that aspires to be an equal and tolerant
society, as we do in Scotland, then this is the right thing to do,” said
Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland’s deputy first minister.
The legislation will include religious exemptions for churches or clergy
that oppose marriage equality.
