我觉得自己还是比较适合潜水,而不是灌水。

毛姆的以画家高更为原型的小说。
故事梗概
男主角思特里克兰德放弃幸福安逸的生活(妻子和两个孩子),离家出走到巴黎去做一
个小画家。按照他自己的话,这就像一个落水的人,即使不会游泳,依然会拼尽全力挣
扎。画画已经成为一种强迫症,折磨他自己和周围的人。
思特里克兰德死在塔希提岛之后,他的作品得到世人的认可。思特里克兰德根本不在乎
这些,活着的时候不在乎,死后也同样不在乎。
跬步和千里
流行的说法是:不积跬步无以至千里(现在也知道,其实积跬步也不一定就可以至千里
)。
但是我觉得下面这句话说得更透彻:
天才和我们相距仅仅一步。同时代者往往不理解这一步就是千里,后代又盲目相信
这千里就是一步。同时代为此而杀了天才,后代又为此而在天才面前焚香。(《侏儒的
话》)
思特里克兰德是那个天才吗?或许吧,因为后世的人很崇拜他,他的作品也很值钱。但
是,和他同时代的人,并不是很瞧得上他。那些正经画家甚至可能还会认为思特里克兰
德不是比他们高一点点,而是低一点点。
思特里克兰德真的是不在乎这些什么一步、千里之类的东西。他好像是被编了程序的机
器人:生活、放弃、作画而燃烧自己的生命、死亡。周围的一切除了为他的画提供素材
,再没有任何价值。
对画(其他艺术品)的欣赏
“内行看门道,外行看热闹”,这基本上就是对包括艺术在内的很多事物的欣赏的两类
方式了。门道重要,还是艺术所表达的“热闹”(作品内在思想、灵魂外化为热闹)重
要呢?我不知道。
我只知道,我是个外行,所以主攻“热闹”,也对“门道”很感兴趣(其实就是个啥也
不知道、啥也有兴趣的孩子)。可能这个类比并不恰当,但是您明白我的意思,是不?
施特略夫是书中的一个配角,而且是比较凄惨的那类。他的老婆,勃朗什,跟思特里克
兰德跑了,而且还死掉了,虽然施特略夫对他老婆真的很好。
施特略夫是一个不成功的小画家,但是做人很好,关键的是:施特略夫是唯一懂得欣赏
思特里克兰德的当代人。他甚至对作者说:如果后世有人提到我们两个,只会是因为我
们和思特里克兰德有过交集。
正是因为施特略夫不是一个很好的画家,所以他更注重思特里克兰德画中的“热闹”,
那些“灵魂层次”的东西。而职业画家可能更偏重于艺术表达:比如文学家用排比句来
烘托气氛,音乐家用某种调式来表达特定的情绪,画家用某种色彩搭配或笔触来体现静
动对比之类的,所以画家圈子里并不欣赏思特里克兰德。
本来嘛,艺术欣赏就是个有点玄的东西,而且越来越玄了。宽松的来讲,没有人可以说
他比别人更懂得如何欣赏。
上帝和魔鬼
这不是书的中心,我想。但是我很喜欢下面的话。
“上帝的磨盘转动很慢,但是却磨得很细,”罗伯特说,颇有些道貌岸然的样子。
但是,完了之后,作者又不辞辛苦的在全书的倒数第二句特意追加了如下的话:
魔鬼要干坏事总可以引证《圣经》
第一句话的意思好像是:善有善报,恶有恶报,不是不报,时候未到。第二句又反问:
你如何知道什么是善、什么是恶呢?
这也好比说:以直报怨,扬善除恶。你如何知道自己是“直”而别人是“怨”呢?如何
可以用最惨烈的手段“除恶”而对自己的主观判断没有任何怀疑呢?
