TV-Film review: The Special Relationship# LeisureTime - 读书听歌看电影

The hilarity of this TV-Film should not be underestimated. This seems to be
not as serious as a historical film, but more in the form of a spool
documentary for the relationship between former UK PM Tony Blair and former
US president Clinton. Actual news footage are liberally interspersed
throughout the film to create the necessary comic effect. It covers
primarily two events: Blair supported President Clinton during the what's
her name Lewinski scandal, and (is this true? wikipedia does not say.) In
return Clinton supported Blair's crusade in kosovo war which won the PM
European fame. (Again, searching kosovo for Blair's wikipedia entry does not
yield anything.)
I think the UK people in general must be wondering what makes a PM dive into
the war on Iraq like it happened in actual history, and this is the second
take. The first one, IMHO, was kinda sorta hinted at by the BBC's TV-series
Merlin, in which Uther Pendragon, king of Camelot has a magic-induced
infatuation with a stately foreign royal lady who turns out to be imposted
by a filth-loving female troll. At the time I saw the story spanning
multiple episodes, I thought it was dragging and probably overdone, but
obviously, for things this magnitude, one just has to work on it until it's
out of the system.
The relationships of both the PM and his spouse, and that between Clinton
and former Senator Clinton were both adapted to film in a very plastic way.
I think the makers of the film just didn't have the heart to get into the
beds of these historical figures. An act which can totally get behind.
Michael Sheen smiles a lot, and his smiles are quite up to par; too bad the
actor for Clinton is lacking sparks.
