the default setting is english-- united states.
and i have checked that i have installed chinese language support.
anybody knows what is going on? i can stil use it to input chinese yesterday.
btw, just wnat to confirm there is no google chinese input under ubuntu?

Same problem here on my laptop. and looking for a solution.
Desktop works fine.
I remember ppl mentioned about a better alternative IM before. I did a
search but couldn't find the thread.

reload SCIM?
fctix is the other IM. SCIM wroks better for me though.

i finally figured this out. somehow, ubuntu uninstalled the chinese input
method. you just need to search scim in synaptic and you will see it.
everything is fine again. have fun.
