you must open the damper when you use the fireplace and close when you are
not using it. but the damper is not tight so you lose quite some energy when
you don't use. better Jude seal it off

Technically speaking, you should let all the exhaust out through the chimney
, as you don't want CO, soot, and other stuff in the exhaust. If you have a
glass front, keep it shut and use the damper to control the burning rate.
The heat you can take from the fireplace is only the radiation and that
absorbed by the hearth, which releases the heat to the room in a slow way
even long after the fire is gone. Yes, the heat in the hot exhaust is lost,
that's why the fireplace is considered an inefficient way. There are new
technologies, such as condensation, to capture the heat from the exhaust.
But come on, the fireplace is only for show nowadays, you don't want it
complicated. You are better off putting those dollars on your furnace and
water heater.

In cold climates, don't use those types taking fresh air from interior. They
don't only suck more heat out of the room than they give, they might also
cause undesired air flow and also lower the interior oxygen level quickly.
Essentially, don't burn anything real in them. An electric convection heater
is more appropriate in such places.
If you really want to burn anything in your fireplace, no matter gas or wood
, you need to have a fresh air intake coming from exterior. The whole idea
is, the air through the fireplace should not have any exchange with the
interior. Taken in from exterior, put out to exterior. Otherwise, you lose
O2 (and possible heat), and run the CO and other risks.

You are right.
But I don't have a choice unless I spent a fortune to modify the fire space.

To be perfectly honest with you, you don't need to do anything about it. It'
s meant to be there for show. Modern furnaces are much more efficient, but
they don't look as good. That's why we still keep fireplaces around.
Of course, in New England, it's still a must. In case of a white-out-black-
out. we have to go to the shelter without fireplaces. Yeah, I know, people
as rich as I am should have their own generators, but I really hates the
maintenance costs.
