Did Vincent van Gogh have talents?
If he did, the second question is: did van Goah have talents before or after
his death?
Was he tall, rich, or handsome?
IMHO, the worst contribution of the popular culture in China is to value
everything in terms of $$!

Then your conclusion is that:
van Gogh had no talents when he was alive (none of his paintings was sold at
high $$), but had a lot of talents after his death (all of his paintings
were sold at high $$). Isn't this statement a paradox? It seems to suggest
that death, not talents, can creat wealth!

What makes van Gogh one of the greatest artists is not the monetary wealth
he left for others to enjoy after his death, but his bold brush strokes on
the canvas, his choice of content, his use of colors, unique impressionistic
style, all of which were a first when he did it, during his short and
tragic life. The fact that he died poor in such a miserable state contrasted
with the intellectual feast he left for the human race to enjoy.
His greatness lied in his heart as a painter who appreciated life and beauty
and who wanted to share his own view of the world with others. No artist
has ever displayed the passion that he was able to do on canvas.
Van Gogh once said:
My only anxiety is what I can do... could I not be of use and good for
something?...And in a picture I wish to say something that would console as
music does.
He also said:
We take beautiful walks together. It is very beautiful here, if one only has
an open and simple eye without any beams in it. But if one has that, it is
beautiful everywhere.

Unfortunately, chasing "talents-turned-into-wealth" according to a "
realistic" standard would likely kills the wealth generated by genii such as
van Gogh because the genius would not get anything in return for his or her
contribution in their life time. Further, such a standard would tend to
generate commonplace talents, not those extraordinary talents ahead of the
time or out of the box.

I beg to differ. If money were the thrust
for progress, Bernard Madoff would be our GOD! But I could hardly imagine
how Madoff contributed to the advancement of the mankind. If anything, he is
a disgraceful cheater who generated nothing valuable and stole/destroyed
other's wealth.
Ironically, by worshiping instant cash and insulting long-lasting but not-
that-instant wealth, the realistic world would lose a sizable portion of its
wealth since the ROI of supporting a genus like van Gogh (from the societal
point of view) is extremely profitable!
