hot water expands.. normally, this excess would flow back to the main water
system, but in some areas like Long Island, NY, the counties don't allow the
water to flow back and enforce back flow prevention, in that case your
system would have to absorb the water.
typically, this is done by installing an expansion tank (about $30 for the
parts, $70 for labor).
