My experience is to move on if they don't reply within a few days
On the other hand, if they have agreed to help you, then the most
effective
way is to give them a deadline (in a polite way). One of my references
did
not reply any of my followup emails after he agreed to help me. But
after I
told him I'd need the letter by next Friday so that my lawyer could send
out my package, he returned the ref letter on Tuesday night.
Just keep in mind most of these professors are very busy. The good thing
is these people are used to live by deadlines and (most often) will try
their best to keep promises.

看来真想朋友说的，自己用过的装修师傅，没有一个敢推荐给别人用的。可能是装修真
是件伤人也伤己的干活。

BTW, I think for this strategy to work, your draft letter need to be nicely
written, which really doesn't require much work from your letter writer.
