The Chinese translation of LRU 最近最少使用 is very misleading. It has been
there for at least 30 years and no one tried to correct it. In the English
term "Least Recently Used", the word "Least" does not at all mean 最少. It
is an adverb that modifies the word "Recently", and "Least Recently" is the
contrary of "Most Recently". Do you know what "Most Recenty" means? it is
not "最近最多". It only means "最近".
So "Least Recently" means "Earilest", "Oldest", "Something happened at the
remotest past time". It has nothing to do with the frequency, which the
Chinese word "最少" is referring to.
In LRU, the data used in the earliest time will be replaced by new data. The
replacement policy does not take into consideration how frequently the data
were used. I suggest we correct the Chinese translation and change it to "
最早使用".
