First, I do not think it is as common as 99%.
Second, although sometimes interview helps, there is almost no way to tell f
alse interest in advance. The only thing that can be done is to kick them ou
t whenever later find them to have no passion for academic research.
Btw, I was a grad student before, and always thought some trash grad student

I assume Phd students to be future faculty or good private/govt
researchers rather than workers.
If this is true for an indidivual student, stay and I would be happy to advi
se. Otherwise, go to the toilet.

in the right and forceful way.

Interest is certainly not a sufficient condition, but a necessary one.
I pursuade students who do not have passion/interest to leave for their ow
n sake. I cannot see their future in the profession, and do not think they c
an be truly productive. Research is after all not flipping burger.
Academia is not for everybody, and they can have other good futures.

No, I beg to disagree. I have seen so many top researchers that are so good
but their personal interests actually
lie somewhere else. You gotta to admit someone is just more talented than
others.
This is not to say that research interests do not help.
My point: for research success, interest is neither a sufficient condition
nor a necessary one. It helps to motivate
people and make them persist.

Say, good chefs, certified nurses, and dental hygienists earn as much as, if
no more than, faculty in many fields (e.g., arts-ish). Let alone

That said, I no longer hold that view.
For me, being a faculty is just a result of cost analysis. What I found out
over these years is that I am
reasonably good at doing research and coming up with novel ideas, and quite
enjoy writing papers. The
