I have a dozen semi-finished papers. Thinking they are not signficant enough
, not motivated to finish them. However, it is difficult to have a
breakthrough in research. What is wrong?

主要我的CHASE 要在3个月内化3000，我要开上1-2个帐户，然后用CHASE CC funding，

breakthrough inventions or ideas are rare to find. for most people with an
average level of energy, resources, and intelligence, the priority is not to
wait to break through, which may not happen even when one dies, but to
publish as much as possible, no matter what. When there is enough water, the
ditch will be made.

我经常会有个类似的问题，如果我做了faculty以后只能产生一般的想法和发现，那我
还要不要做faculty呢。。faculty这个职业吸引我一是因为生活方式可以比较自由，二
是可以做超越日常体验之外的工作，但是如果二没有了，那一的吸引力也就小得多了。
。还不如干脆去挣钱早点退休享受生活好一点。。
有没有过来人说说这么想是不是太理想化了？一个做的还不错但是应该没有希望做出
breakthrough的faculty的生活还有什么地方吸引人呢？

define breakthrough.
if breakthrough (as defined by you) is what you are after and it's not
within your reach, you can certainly quit. it's a personal choice.

I am happy with my life style. I do not have any pressure to publish. I
only hope to have some research done that I feel very proud of.

We are all making breakthroughs on a daily basis, although not everybody
could become Newton or Darwin. I am pround of myself as long as I think I
tried my best.

you might get some new ideas if you stop working on those topics for a while
, say a month, and then come back
the problems used to bother you so much might just disappear
give it a little time.

breakthrough 我的定义就是能写进textbook的东西：真的，长久被一些人记住，对一
部分人理解问题有持久的影响。
当然，能不能有这样的发现很难预测，我的问题一直是，如果我有一天figure out我能
做出这样事情的概率很低很低，那我应该马上quit,还是应该enjoy faculty lifestyle。
这个不涉及faculty职业应该怎么评价的问题，我最想知道的是，faculty作为一个职业
，如果排除研究发现这个因素，一般来看和其他职业相比有什么优缺点。毕竟我也没有
能力机会经常去体验别的职业都怎么样
每次有别的诱惑我都会想这个问题然后很头大。。

有时候需要有一个信仰，或者信念，坚信自己能作出能写进教科书的成果。或者哪
一天灵感或者机遇到来，就成了。但这不是空等就能等出来的。平常做的东西就当
是积累。所以少灌水，多写点高质量的文章，即使没有达到重大突破的程度。
有别的诱惑么，想想能不能兼容并包。我见过不止一个人，科研、教学、公司三不
误。不过这些人里面有重大突破的我好像还没见到。。。

写进小学课本--historical breakthrough.e.g. 十进制
初中课本--fundamental breakthrough.e.g. 欧式空间，牛顿力学，元素周期等

现在小学、初中、高中课本都没那么容易进了，基本上都固定下来了。
最多也就是本科、研究生的课本也许能忝列一二。
但也不能说明太多，因为现在的很多教科书也就那回事，里面的参考文献海了去了。
原老板鼓励我要有花10-15年的耐心去做写进教科书的工作，
深以为然，但万丈高楼平地起，还是先发发文章弄点attention再奢谈其他。

做发考题就像卖包子，小本生意：
1. 不是非要卖天津狗不理那个水平的包子，中国只有一个狗不理
2. 卖包子归根结底是为了谋生，不可太当回事，只是填人肚子
3. 能否香飘满城，看关系，看造化。以那个为目标，容易一场空。
4. 各地都有不错的包子铺，主人都是知足常乐，小日子不错

推荐Richard Hamming的you and your research一文。
经常思考一下自己是不是在做很有意义的工作（比如breakthrough，比如能让自己
proud），如果不是，那又何必做下去呢。当然，前提是你有这个choice的时候。
