For your data point.
Barclay is definitely another kind of animal. It's notorious for it's
insanely conservativeness on approving ppl with many recent hard hits in
their CR. I heard that before, and yet still wanted to try my luck. I want
to get on board in the last minute for the USA master card with 10k
anniversary bonus miles.

My background: 3 years of credit, 20+ accounts, app-o-roma player. 9 hits on
record. No business with Barclay before.
I got rejected after application, no surprise. Having tried to call the
recon line immediately, for 3 times, used any of the known tricks (small
talks, no mentioning sign-up bonus, emphasizing clean credit history,
promising not being a credit seeker, etc.), the best I got is a sympathetic
moan from a representative. I was told that I need to "further prove my
credibility" (means many of my new accounts are less than 1 years old) and
was "welcome to apply when it is proved" (means I was fucked this time).
What is this, marriage? I didn't complain, and made the right decision:
thank them calmly, and hang up.
The "hang-up-and-call-back" trick didn't work, either!
I heard that Barclay tracks the number of times of your calls. So I
calmed down, waited for 1 day and picked up the phone again. This time I
decided to try another strategy.
Then Dan's on the line. I went through the regular part (greeting,
pretending surprised getting rejected, background check, blabla) and finally
heard the question I waited for so long. This was the moment of truth.
-Dan: Now I see a lot of inquiries in your recent record, could you
explain to me why are you seeking credit?
-me: Because I'm smart. (pause) I'm just kidding.
-Dan: (jiggles)
-me: Look, yes you see a lot of inquiries in my credit report, because I'm a
savvy customer. I always use the card that gives me the most value. If you
notice, you'll find that most of my cards gives me category rewards. I
travel a lot (true), and I fly US Airways a lot (false), I just want to get
a card that makes sense. I'm NOT an aggressive credit seeker, as you see it
in my history. I always pay my bills in full. No late payment, No revolving
balance. I know my financial status. I'm just being honest.
Then he jiggled again and asked for a few more questions about my liquidity.
He finally approved me with a cl of 10k.
So 4 calls for a card. I never did anything like this. Whew!
I'm happy writing this now, but not intend to boast anything. If no
trick works, maybe it's worth a try to promote yourself, with you the
salesman, he the customer. I sold a story, and he sold me a card. Hope my
story helps.
Have a nice day.
