There are a number of differences, here's a list of some:
1. I bonds are sold year round, TIPS (at auction) only a few times a year (
they can also be bought on the secondary market year round)
2. There is a difference in timing. I bonds always reflect the CPI-U "average"
of a 6 month period (Sept-March or March-Sept) that has already passed. TIPS
are adjusted with CPI-U changes occuring in the future. Specifically, TIPS
have a fixed real yield (for instance 2%) determine
