It depends on when you will need the money.
Right now, the currency appreciation is about 5% per year. 3 year interest
rate is 5.25%?, if he can let the parents buy the 5yr bonds, it will be even
higher (6.15%). no tax on interest. (Note, One differenct is the interest
calculation: here we say APR, but in china, 5yr 6.15% means, you get 6.15%*5
interest after 5 years.so china's 6.15% equal to 5.4% here.). So it is over
10% every year.
If you need safety and don't need the money for 5 years, send it back to
china. Otherwise, I perhaps will put it in ROTH IRA (this year 5000 + next
year 5000), in inflation protected bond fund. If you need it for emergency,
you can get the contribution without penalty (after 5 years or immidiately I
forget, ask the representitive)
