yours is not alternate picking ya?
Of course, it also depends on how fast you want to play,
and wchich note you want to emphasize (down picking normally
give more sound).

actually.. I am so used to alternate picking.. I can't stop myself from
picking alternately.. esp on the off beat..
a good exercise is to play the c major scale.. or any major scale in
position.. play 2 octaves.. and skip strings.. so u play the notes on e
string, then jump to the d string as oppose to going onto the a string.. then
jump back onto the a string when u r done with the d string.. then jump to the
g string.. back to d, jump to b, back to g, jump to E, back to b...
