A 4-year-old Dudley boy died of his injuries Saturday after plunging from an
escalator onto a glass case inside a Sears department store, authorities
said.
The boy fell Friday evening about 6:35 p.m. while riding the escalator with
family and a friend at the Auburn Mall, said Worcester County District
Attorney Joseph Early in a statement. Police told the Telegram & Gazette of
Worcester the boy grabbed onto the escalator railing and was somehow pulled
over, falling onto the glass case below.
Auburn police and fire departments arrived moments after the boy fell and
took him to the pediatric emergency room at UMass Memorial Medical Center,
fire officials said. He died a day later, about 10 p.m. Saturday. Fire and
police declined to comment yesterday.
Early identified the boy as Mark DiBona.
“He fell from an escalator on the second floor of the Sears store at the
mall,” Early said. “The boy had been shopping with members of his family
and a friend.”
Sears spokeswoman Kim Freely said grief counselors are available for any of
their employees who were traumatized by what they saw.
“Customer safety is a top priority for our company,” Freely said. “Our
thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time. We’re continuing to
cooperate with the police and district attorney’s office.”
Freely identified the parents as Eric and Laura DiBona, of Dudley. A woman
who answered the phone at the DiBona family said the family had no comment.
The district attorney’s spokesman, Tim Connolly, said state police assigned
to that office are still investigating the boy’s death. He said the
medical examiner would determine the cause and manner of death, but no foul
play is suspected.
