I always have a hard time understanding gold bugs. What is so good about
gold as a currency, especially in the digital age like today? And it's not
like all of us are multi-millionaires and billionaries that we should truly
be worried about inflation that much, because for many of us the future
earning power is much greater comparing to our existing assets. Yes, gold
standard may prevent countries from printing money liberally, but so what?

There is no doubt paper money allows another way to tax. That's
exactly (partly) why it has prevailed. It is a less painful way
to tax, which is needed by all polical powers. Whether you like
it or not, society evolve to squeeze every last bit of
productivity from individuals, and fiat currency helps that.

EU prevents PIGS from printing money and the last G20 has basically decided
to go deflation. Yes, it's bad there. But we will see Euro getting stronger

gold will continue its uptrend aginst dollars if Ben keeps printing.
Euro may fail eventurally due to disintegration of Euro land, but it is

This is a classic example of people so getting used to depreciated fiat
currency that they don't understand how money works any more. What do you
mean 'enough' gold? There's always enough gold if you allow the price to
self-adjust rather than propping it up with government intervention.
There's a huge number of personal computers sold every year, do we worry
about if there's not enough currency to back the sale up? No, b/c price
adjusts itself by making older models cheap. We therefore need not

Deflation of currency discourages capital investing. More importantly,
A stable store of value prevents the society from being more productive
collectively -- because people would be exploited less if they don't
fear their money would lose value. And such society inevitably either
adopted the better way -- fiat money -- or perished. It seems that you
never understand that all these concepts, be it 'currency', 'value',
or 'private property', are collectively invented, or more precisely,
evolved,

You are the most optimistic person about civilization I have met so far.

Uh no. A society remains productive as long as the hardworking people are
rewarded and allowed to keep the profit they sweat for. It ceases to be
so when you let lazy people steal from productive ones with phony excuses
such as 'social equality', and fiat money is a way to steal shamelessly.
Again no. The purpose of money is to have honest trade. In the early days

You get so indoctrinated. 'Trade' is just an illusive process to
entice people to work. The vast majority of the people are not
rational. People are most productive if they thought they were
working for themselves while in fact they only keep a very small
potion of the fruit of their labor. The former part is optional,
but the latter part is essential. There was never 'honest trade',
and there will never be. Your picture of trading between free man
is just what the society wants you to believe.

But what you said "both bonds and stocks have outperformed gold in the

I agree that we are in the hard asset phase in the hard vs. soft asset cycle
, greatly thanks to money printing. So your point of gold may outperform
stock and/or bond is well taken.
but we don't know it for sure. assuming gold and stock and bond all have
similar volatility and expcted return, by combining all of them, you will
still have the same expected return, but much lower standard dev. that's the
advantage of a balanced portfolio, vs. all-in a single asset.
