Head of Household is for people who are actually married legally but can be "considered unmarried". Most often case is that the couple is legally separated and/or in process of divorce. IT does not apply to the couple live in different city due to job assignment. IF you are single, you can claim your parents as independent unless you use itemized deduction. It does not matter whether you file "single" or "Head of Household", which you are not qualified. Much Tax softwares can help you go through the test and comparison.

No. Single people can DEFINITELY use Head of Household if they have a qualifying dependent. That's the normal case for Head of Household. http://www.irs.gov/instructions/i1040/ar01.html#d0e1957 Head of Household This filing status is for unmarried individuals who provide a home for certain other persons.
