U.S. COURT ORDERS SEIZURE OF “DVD RIPPING” SOFTWARE DOMAINS AND FUNDS
BY ERNESTO ON MARCH 10, 2014 C: 302
BREAKING
A New York federal court has granted the seizure of several domain names,
bank funds and social media accounts belonging to DVD ripping software
company DVDFab. Judge Broderick ruled in favor of AACS, the licensing outfit
founder by Warner Bros, Disney, Microsoft, Intel and others.
AACS, the decryption licensing outfit founded by a group of movie studios
and technology partners including Warner Bros, Disney, Microsoft and Intel,
has launched a crackdown on DRM-circumvention software.
In an effort to limit the availability of so-called DVD ripping software,
AACS has sued the company behind the popular DVD ripping software DVDFab.
Under U.S. law it’s forbidden to distribute software with the primary
intention of circumventing copyright protection. In its complaint, AACS
accuses the “DVDFab Group” of violating the DMCA’s anti-circumvention
clause by selling tools that can bypass their DVD encryption.
“The DVDFab Group openly touts these illegal circumvention attributes of
the DVDFab Software on the DVDFab Websites, advertising that, among other
things, its software products ‘remove all Blu-ray copy protections,’ and
‘can remove … all known AACS copy protections’,” AACS writes in its
complaint.
To stop the Chinese-based DVDFab from distributing its software in public,
AACS moved for a preliminary injunction. After DVDFab failed to respond in
court the request was granted by New York Federal Judge Vernon Broderick. TF
has obtained a copy of the order.
dvdfab
The broad injunction is unique in its scope, ordering several domain
registrars to disable all domains associated with the DVDFab group. This
includes DVDFab.com, DVDFab.net, DVDidle.com, 3d-videoconverters.com,
3dBluRay-ripper.com, Blu-Ray-ripper.us, Blu-Ray-Software.us, BluRayripper.jp
, BluRaysbs3d.com, BluRaysoft.jp, CopyBiuRay.us, DVDFab.jp, DVDFab9.com and
DVDvideosoft.jp.
At the time of writing none of the above domains can be reached.
Besides the domain names, DVDFab’s hosting providers are also ordered to
stop servicing the company, as are other online services including Facebook,
Twitter and Google+. Whether AACS has asked for the closure of DVDFab’s
social media accounts is unclear, as they remain active for now.
Adding to DVDFab’s troubles, Judge Broderick also ordered several banks and
payment providers to freeze or stop processing the company’s funds. This
includes PayPal, Amazon Payments, Visa and MasterCard.
The injunction
In summary, the order grants AACS the power to completely wipe all traces of
DVDFab from the Internet, and make it hard for the company to resurface
elsewhere. At least, that was the plan.
The Chinese software vendor is not giving up easily, and is already making a
comeback.
“Existing bookmarks for either site may not work from some locations, so
temporary sites for both are being prepared and will be online shortly,” a
company spokesman says, pointing users to dvdfab.jp.
Quite how long this domain and associated payment services can remain
functional remains to be seen.
In any case, AACS and the movie industry will be encouraged by this broad
injunction, and it wouldn’t be a big surprise if we see this strategy being
repeated against other piracy-related targets in the near future.

I always thought we had a right to be able to backup our media. Cheap move
by the courts!

Never heard of the DMCA, have you? If it requires circumvention of copy
protections, you no longer have a right to backup your media. If your
original breaks, you have to buy a new one.
Ideas have been locked up as property, and this is ultimately no less a form
of censorship than trying to suppress ideas, but Washington and other
governments around the world don't care because they have been bribed by the
entertainment cartels. Vapor is now more valuable than things that
physically exist.

if i were an independent band that used that software to rip my own cdrs and
dvdrs , i'd sue the shit out of that AACS company so bad ......why not its
putting you out of business what have you to lose?

Solution to the DMCA backup dilemma: Pirate stuff. Seriously, backups are
for buy-fags. My backup is TPB

Morons, violating fair use law again. This is why I quit buying
entertainment media. We the consumer have a right to make 1 copy of each
product we purchase to store in a safe place regardless of piracy crying
from the MAFIAA. People must quit buying and wasting money on their garbage.

Thank you AACS, I now realise that I can't buy legitimate media because I
always need to be able to make a DRM free copy because of the various
players I use.
Congratulations....clap....clap...clap.

I recall that not long ago how some UK politicians were calling on format
shfting of owned media to be made lawful. For example converting your CDs to
MP3 and FLAC files for your portable music player, or even ripping DVDs and
BluRays to put your favourite movies on your new Android Tablet.
Where is the problem there when you have already paid for the media?
This goes to show how evil and stupid this anti-circumvention law is when
this just allows the MAFIAA to play the gatekeepers to your use. The
ultimate spoil-sports there to stop you enjoying your purchase in the time,
place and format you want.
With that said they are playing a fools game when DVDs and BluRays are
already well hacked as the public reclaim their rights which stupid law and
corrupt politicians raped from them. Pandora's Box has been opened and all
their efforts to close it will never restore the world to how they desire.
So good luck DVDFab when we are all behind your aspirations.

and i'll bet anyone a dime to a dollar that once the USA entertainment
industries have done everything they want as far as stopping companies,
software and hardware, from doing what they dont want, they will take over
as many bits as possible, including the use of the worst 'piracy tool' on
the 'net, ie, torrents, and expect everyone to flock to use them! what is
even more annoying than what is happening here, other countries are doing as
much as they can possibly do to help and they are not anything to do with
Hollywood etc!! i dont know what is going on, but i cannot for one second
believe that everyone is shit scared of the USA. certainly the Russians aren
't, but even their vKontac service is doing what the biggest bunch of lying
ass holes there is, the USTR, tells them to do!!
