Google’s Nexus Line: Nexus 6 Phablet, Nexus 9 Tablet and Nexus Player
By WSJ Staff
The Nexus 6 smartphone, built by Motorola, was unveiled by Google GOOGL -2.
27% on Oct. 15. —Google Inc.
A day ahead of Apple 'sAAPL -0.98% expected introduction of next-gen iPads
and iMacs, Google is announcing three new Nexus devices: a Nexus 6
smartphone, a Nexus 9 tablet and the Nexus Player, a set-top box for
streaming media and games. The new trio runs on the latest version of Google
’s Android operating system, Android 5.0 “Lollipop.”
Here’s a rundown of the specs and pricing for each new Nexus device:
Nexus 6 Smartphone
Google’s latest Nexus phone will be built by Motorola Mobility, the
smartphone maker that Google is in the process of selling to Lenovo. The
display will clearly place the Nexus 6 into “phablet” territory, coming in
with a screen that measures about 5.9 inches and has a resolution of 2560
×1440 pixels. Inside, the Nexus 6 will have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805
processor, Ardeno 420 GPU and 3GB of RAM. Google says this power combination
makes the handset especially good at playing high-definition video smoothly
. It’ll sell in Midnight Blue or Cloud White.
Unlike last year’s Nexus 5 and 2012′s Nexus 4 phones—which were both
built by LG and launched unlocked for $349—the Nexus 6 isn’t selling for a
relative bargain price. An unlocked Nexus 6 will sell for $649 with 32GB of
storage or $699 for 64GB. (By comparison, the iPhone 6 Plus, which has a 5.
5-inch screen, sells for $749 unlocked with 16GB of storage, and $849 with
64GB.)
Another departure from past phones: The Nexus 6 will be offered by all four
major U.S. carriers—AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint and Verizon—at subsidized
prices.
Like Motorola’s current flagship phone, the Moto X, the Nexus 6 has front
facing speakers sitting above and below the display. On the front, the new
phablet has a 2-megapixel camera, and out back, there’s a 13-megapixel
shooter with optical image stabilization. The Nexus 6 will ship with
Motorola’s Turbo Charger, a battery charger that can fill the Nexus 6′s 3,
220 mAh battery up (about 6 hours of battery life) in just 15 minutes. The
Nexus 6 will be available for pre-order on Google Play starting Wednesday.
Google’s Nexus 9 tablet, built by HTC, launches on Oct. 15.
Nexus 9 Tablet
Google’s previous two tablets, the Asus 2357.TW -3.31%-built Nexus 7 and
the Samsung-built Nexus 10, are being replaced by a single slate: the Nexus
9, built by HTC. The Nexus 9 will feature an 8.9-inch, 2048×1536-pixel
display with a 4:3 aspect ratio—spec-wise, that makes it a perfect middle
ground between the iPad Air and iPad Mini with Retina screen.
Like the old Nexus 10 and the new Nexus 6, the Nexus 9 will have front-
facing, stereo speakers. It’ll be powered by a dual-core, 2.3 GHz Nvidia
Tegra K1 processor and Kepler DX11 GPU. And Google says that despite its
large size, it’s thin and light enough to hold with one hand thanks to a
thin bezel, brushed metal sides and a soft, grippy back.
The tablet will sell for $399 with 16GB of storage, the same price the Nexus
10 sold for when it debuted in 2012. (The last Nexus 7 was just $229.) The
Nexus 9 will come in three colors: Lunar White, Indigo Black and Sand. The
tablet will be available for pre-order on Google Play Wednesday, and will
soon sell at retailers such as Best Buy and Walmart.
If the focus for those previous Nexus tablets was casual computing, Google
is positioning the Nexus 9 as a tablet you can enjoy both at home and and at
the office. An optional keyboard cover—which is reminiscent of the covers
sold with Microsoft’s Surface tablets—will cost $129.
Google unveiled its Nexus Player video streaming and gaming set-top box on
Oct. 15. —Google Inc.
Nexus Player Set-Top Box
The Nexus Player, built by Asus, is the latest in a long line of Google
products intended to bring Google and the TV together. Following the $35
Chromecast dongle, the discontinued-before-it-could be released Nexus Q
streamer and countless Google TV products, the $99 hockey-puck-shaped device
will compete directly with Apple TV and Roku, using Wi-Fi to stream movies
and TV shows from Google Play YouTube and popular services including Netflix.
It runs on Android TV, a couch-operated variant of Android that Google
showed off at its I/O developer conference in June. The Nexus Player will
also double as a mini gaming console, letting users play Android games on a
TV. It’ll ship with a remote control, and an optional game controller will
be sold separately for $39.99. The Nexus Player will be powered by a 1.8GHZ
Intel Silvermont Quad-Core CPU. It will sell exclusively through the Google
Play store in the U.S. and Canada, and will be available for pre-order by
the end of the week.
