So I find myself in a situation most linux users likely share, needing to
use Microsoft Office. In my case, it's collaborators unwillingness to use
LaTeX and the poor interoperation between LibreOffice and Office. I usually
use a windows VM to run a copy of Office 2016 (provided under a local
install of Office 365) but I was getting tired of the time/memory/cpu usage
associated with spinning up a vm to edit a word document.
Knowing that Office 365 gives you the ability to create and edit documents
from a browser, I thought I would give it a go. Trying to open a blank word
document using the latest Firefox and Chromium resulted in a browser crash
almost every time. I dug around a little and found a reference to user-agent
strings causing some problems. Turns out that if you change your user-agent
string to Edge13, Office online operates perfectly without crashing.
Just a tip I figured I'd share with others who find themselves in the same
boat.
