背景：生物类，美国州立博士，藤校 postdoc，20+文章，1/3第一作者，没顶尖牛文，
300不到引用。30个不到审稿。老3样。
版上信息都很全了，只有一些想补充的：
put yourself in the shoes of USCIS officer: 怎么说呢，我觉得他们基本看不懂学
术贡献，不会太care哪篇文章讲了哪个story，所以，在contribution，我没有采用常
见的以几篇代表文章为中心展开的模板，而是采用了"ref 关键句“模板：分成6段阐述：
1) My research was extensive referenced, used and implemented by scientists
worldwide. 2) My research was heavily discussed and provoked widespread
public commentary. 3) My research has been used as a teaching tool by
worldwide professors. 4) I was invited to give seminar speech at top
universities and conferences as a leading expert in the field. 5) My
research influenced and revolutionized the field 6) experts throughout the
field currently consider my work important.
所有的文章，会议，推荐信，乱七八糟的东西都是分拆到这6项里面。我的依据就是，
他们看不懂你的贡献，但这6个section总归看得懂的 （他们ref里面就是用的类似的语
言）。
2) exhibit list我花了点精力去做了，5页左右，就是一个简洁版的petition letter
。highlight top percentage all over the letter，用的是eigenfactor，基本没提
impact factor。在信里我没有用任何图表，所有的油灯图什么的都在exhibit里面 (估
计他们不会去看的）。美国人喜欢看书的多，但去看看书店的top seller，有多少带图
表有多少基本通篇都是文字的？
3) 我用的google scholar，没有区分自引，他引，就打印了一个summary，里面乱七八
糟的中文引用都没有去管。油灯图就打印了一个researcherID的版本。没有和平均数进
行对比。感觉任何地方出现average都是大忌啊。
4) 任何地方都不要出现young，potential，will这些词。推荐信写完用关键词搜一些
把，有时候不留神这些词就出现了。不要放推荐人的CV （打印他们一个主页就行，以
防对比citation）。小奖小东西travel award都不要放，推荐人如果坚持要用young
scientist，最好还是把那份推荐信放抽屉里留个纪念把，不要拿出去显摆了。版上不
是有“断臂”的说服嘛，哈哈。
5) 学文科的officer，会care一些我们理工care的东西吗？
真心觉得没有必要手工画油灯图，手工翻译google scholar里的中文引用。另外，为自
己省点时间和精力，也为后来的兄弟姐妹着想，就不要区分他引自引了。Exhibit list
写好了，contribution抓
住重点，推荐信不要让抓到小辫子，就可以了。

Frankly, I wrote less than 10% of my own words in the Contribution. 90+% of
the contents are from citing recommendation letter, citing the sentences in
the papers who cited my papers. etc.
I think the outline is really the key for my contribution, which I already
shared in my original poster. I just re-group all the sentences in
recommendation letters, different papers, evidence into this 6 sections. I
honestly believe that once you finish writing your recommendation letter.
There is very little writing involved in your petition letter, especially
the contribution part. Hope this helps.

In my point of view, you have to demonstrate to IO that you are "at the top
of your field" (e.g. top 1%). How can comparing to "average" can deliver
this message? I was worried about RFE so I choose not to show this kind of
data.
If I HAVE TO compare, I would compare my productivity to my reference, who
claimed in the letter to be at the top of the field (I like assistant
professor much better than senior full professors because they could be more
like "peers"). But this is also tricky, as you cannot find all reference
who is at the similar level as you. Sometimes you can not avoid finding
reference who has tons of papers and citation (I have this kind of reference
too).
So weighing all the options, I choose not to compare with anything. Just use
hard data to show my papers were published on top journals. The citations
to my papers are at the top in my field (using certain key words) in ISI
data base.

所有的文章，会议，推荐信，乱七八糟的东西都是分拆到这6项里面。我的依据就是，
他们看不懂你的贡献，但这6个section总归看得懂的 （他们ref里面就是用的类似的语
言）。
2) exhibit list我花了点精力去做了，5页左右，就是一个简洁版的petition letter
。highlight top percentage all over the letter，用的是eigenfactor，基本没提
impact factor。在信里我没有用任何图表，所有的油灯图什么的都在exhibit里面 (估
计他们不会去看的）。美国人喜欢看书的多，但去看看书店的top seller，有多少带图
表有多少基本通篇都是文字的？
3) 我用的google scholar，没有区分自引，他引，就打印了一个summary，里面乱七八
糟的中文引用都没有去管。油灯图就打印了一个researcherID的版本。没有和平均数进
行对比。感觉任何地方出现average都是大忌啊。
4) 任何地方都不要出现young，potential，will这些词。推荐信写完用关键词搜一些
把，有时候不留神这些词就出现了。不要放推荐人的CV （打印他们一个主页就行，以
防对比citation）。小奖小东西travel award都不要放，推荐人如果坚持要用young
scientist，最好还是把那份推荐信放抽屉里留个纪念把，不要拿出去显摆了。版上不
是有“断臂”的说服嘛，哈哈。
5) 学文科的officer，会care一些我们理工care的东西吗？
真心觉得没有必要手工画油灯图，手工翻译google scholar里的中文引用。另外，为自
己省点时间和精力，也为后来的兄弟姐妹着想，就不要区分他引自引了。Exhibit list
写好了，contribution抓
住重点，推荐信不要让抓到小辫子，就可以了。

什么是独立推荐人？我以为，没在一起发过文章的就是独立推荐人。 实验室已经离开
的师兄师姐，老板的朋友，你朋友的哥们，etc
并且，要通过他们的口吻，点名自己是“独立推荐人”。比如："I met ananatl at a
meeting, I was very impressed by his work.... As I have never collaborated
with him, I am writing this letter as an independent reference...."
既然人家专家已经自称独立推荐人了，officer不信也得信，他有必要挑战不懂领域的
“权威”吗？
用助理教授，副教授的信我觉得根本没有可以担心的。助理教授如果不是专家，那
postdoc更不可能是“顶尖专家”，不是“顶尖专家“能拿eb1a吗？
助理教授在信里可以自称“world expert” （对你来说用这些词也是一个很好的拍马

洲研究所的不同职位的意义，你能指望officer能搞懂？只要推荐人认可你信里说的啥
，那他就是啥。
我用了师兄师姐的信，没用以前和现在老板的信。现老板写了一份笼统的赞美信，我放
到additional info去支持employment什么的了（虽然EB1a是不需要employment的）
我对独立推荐人的定义：现在工作单位和你的不同 AND 没在一起发过文章，写过基金
AND 信里自称“independent reference”。再严格的定义，一是没有必要，二是浪费

所有的文章，会议，推荐信，乱七八糟的东西都是分拆到这6项里面。我的依据就是，
他们看不懂你的贡献，但这6个section总归看得懂的 （他们ref里面就是用的类似的语
言）。
2) exhibit list我花了点精力去做了，5页左右，就是一个简洁版的petition letter
。highlight top percentage all over the letter，用的是eigenfactor，基本没提
impact factor。在信里我没有用任何图表，所有的油灯图什么的都在exhibit里面 (估
计他们不会去看的）。美国人喜欢看书的多，但去看看书店的top seller，有多少带图
表有多少基本通篇都是文字的？
3) 我用的google scholar，没有区分自引，他引，就打印了一个summary，里面乱七八
糟的中文引用都没有去管。油灯图就打印了一个researcherID的版本。没有和平均数进
行对比。感觉任何地方出现average都是大忌啊。
4) 任何地方都不要出现young，potential，will这些词。推荐信写完用关键词搜一些
把，有时候不留神这些词就出现了。不要放推荐人的CV （打印他们一个主页就行，以
防对比citation）。小奖小东西travel award都不要放，推荐人如果坚持要用young
scientist，最好还是把那份推荐信放抽屉里留个纪念把，不要拿出去显摆了。版上不
是有“断臂”的说服嘛，哈哈。
5) 学文科的officer，会care一些我们理工care的东西吗？
真心觉得没有必要手工画油灯图，手工翻译google scholar里的中文引用。另外，为自
己省点时间和精力，也为后来的兄弟姐妹着想，就不要区分他引自引了。Exhibit list
写好了，contribution抓
住重点，推荐信不要让抓到小辫子，就可以了。

什么是独立推荐人？我以为，没在一起发过文章的就是独立推荐人。 实验室已经离开
的师兄师姐，老板的朋友，你朋友的哥们，etc
并且，要通过他们的口吻，点名自己是“独立推荐人”。比如："I met ananatl at a
meeting, I was very impressed by his work.... As I have never collaborated
with him, I am writing this letter as an independent reference...."
既然人家专家已经自称独立推荐人了，officer不信也得信，他有必要挑战不懂领域的
“权威”吗？
用助理教授，副教授的信我觉得根本没有可以担心的。助理教授如果不是专家，那
postdoc更不可能是“顶尖专家”，不是“顶尖专家“能拿eb1a吗？
助理教授在信里可以自称“world expert” （对你来说用这些词也是一个很好的拍马
屁机会），officer不信也得信，again，他有必要挑战不懂领域的"权威"吗？我一个推

it depends on your own situation. If you have more than 10 papers, I would
suggest you separate them. Otherwise, put them together.

Frankly, I wrote less than 10% of my own words in the Contribution. 90+% of
the contents are from citing recommendation letter, citing the sentences in
the papers who cited my papers. etc.
I think the outline is really the key for my contribution, which I already
shared in my original poster. I just re-group all the sentences in
recommendation letters, different papers, evidence into this 6 sections. I
honestly believe that once you finish writing your recommendation letter.
There is very little writing involved in your petition letter, especially
the contribution part. Hope this helps.

In my point of view, you have to demonstrate to IO that you are "at the top
of your field" (e.g. top 1%). How can comparing to "average" can deliver
this message? I was worried about RFE so I choose not to show this kind of
data.
If I HAVE TO compare, I would compare my productivity to my reference, who
claimed in the letter to be at the top of the field (I like assistant
professor much better than senior full professors because they could be more
like "peers"). But this is also tricky, as you cannot find all reference
who is at the similar level as you. Sometimes you can not avoid finding
reference who has tons of papers and citation (I have this kind of reference
too).
So weighing all the options, I choose not to compare with anything. Just use
hard data to show my papers were published on top journals. The citations
to my papers are at the top in my field (using certain key words) in ISI
data base.

choices as your reference than full professors, NAS members or Nobel prize
