I asked a violinist about how to choose violin students. He will graduate
with DMA (Doctor of Musical Arts) in this May, from a good music
conservatory in East Coast.
He told me several factors that a violin teacher likes
1. good ears. Violin is different from piano. If a student is not very
sensitive to the pitch (音高),then he may have more challenges in
learning it.
2. younger students will be easier to master the posture, 3 to 6 years is
the ideal age to start violin.
3. kids with piano learning experience. It trains their ears and they will
read music quickly. He said the training in piano is the foundation of many
other instruments. This is one of the reasons that piano lessons are popular.
4. Intelligence
However, clever pupil may not have the patience to some techniques; such as
how to use the bow. It will take some time to master techniques.
5. parents have good music training.
They will be able to help teachers to train their children.
His advice:
1. The easiest way is to train kids to love music, so they will be motivated
to learn.
However, it takes time and it needs parents and teachers work together.
Therefore, he
encourage kids listen more music and it will help them to love music and be
eager to learn.
2. Try to start with 45 minutes to 60 minutes per lesson. Because it takes
time to tune the violin, it also takes time for teacher to train parents how
to help students to practice at home.
3. Don't push kids to learn the violin.
He said he has heard too many bad stories. Kids were forced to play the
violin and they did become advanced level players. however, once they go to
college, they will stop if they don't love it.Yes, there are some violinists
who were forced to practice when they were very young, but most teachers
don't recommend this method.
This is not an advertisement and he is not interested in teaching the violin
any more. He is a also a composer and conductor.
Because some top conductors can earn one million dollars a year, they
are not interested in teaching violin any more. Some famous violinists or
pianists don't like to teach because they can charge $20,000 for one concert
