Donations Are Great
Some time ago I was blessed with a donation of 25 computers from the local
General Electric plant. They were moving one of their operations to another
state and did not want to take the office equipment and the computers with
them. The computers were not state-of-the-art by their standards, but they
were filled the needs of my school just fine. So one weekend the school
rented a U-Haul truck and a dozen or so parents met at GE, lugged the
computers out of the building and brought them back to my school. But I
remember thinking that this was not the hard part; I thought the really hard
part was yet to come.
The computers were made by Lanier and they had their own proprietary
operating system, software, and hardware (e.g., network cards, printers,
keyboards). So I needed to get hold of a Lanier expert, which I was NOT.
Actually this was far less difficult than I initially thought. The local
Lanier Business folks were very obliging. They provided a techie to help me
get the system up-and-running. The techie even took time and gave me lessons
in running the system...that was terrific. We had the Lanier computers for
about 3-4 years and they worked just fine. I only needed to call the Lanier
techie a few times during that period, and he was quite willing to help me.

Stanford Report, October 29, 1997
Intel computer donation: 10/29/97
Intel donation boosts technology
across campus
BY DAVID F. SALISBURY
Campus loading docks will be flooded with cartons branded with the “Intel
Inside” logo over the next few weeks.
The nation’s premier chip maker is giving the campus some 400 machines and
350 related peripherals, to be used in departments ranging from anthropology
to statistics.
The monitors, tape drives, graphics cards and networking hubs, with a market
value of $3.2 million, are part of an overall grant to 13 universities
totaling $29 million that makes up the second round of the company’s three-
year, $90 million Technology for Education 2000 program.
"The interesting thing about this is that the equipment is not just going to
electrical engineering and computer science, it is going to a number of
different departments like anthropology and statistics, which haven't
received these kinds of equipment grants in the past," said Laura Breyfogle,
a development officer at the School of Engineering who worked with the
company on the award.
Some of the equipment, for example, has been earmarked for John W. Rick,
associate professor in anthropology, to set up a laboratory to apply virtual
reality to anthropological research and teaching. The equipment will allow
realistic walk-throughs of archaeological sites. The scientists also will be
able to prepare extremely precise three-dimensional models of objects and
spaces that can be used for analysis.
A next-generation system for performing brain surgery by wire is another
unusual project receiving equipment. It is a joint effort by researchers at
the Medical School and computer science Professors Oussama Khatib, Jean-
Claude Latombe, Serge Plotkin and Carlo Tomasi. The basic idea is to create
a system in which the surgeon operates on images displayed on a workstation
using a device that provides artificial force feedback. The device is linked
to a robot arm that actually performs the surgery.
Equipment is being distributed to a large cast of characters for purposes
that fall into seven general categories:

Steve Jobs accepts a check for the early distribution of the Apple Computer.
What’s in the Apple collection? Books, periodicals, press releases and
company speeches – all about Apple computers and software. There are also
user group newsletters, along with other miscellaneous artifacts. Records
from the Apple Library Users Group and the Apple Library of Tomorrow program
also are part of the collection. The memorabilia and related artifacts
paint not only a historical picture of the computer advancements Apple made,

The Apple archives even include an 1980′s-era video company video featuring

“The collection was
