arch 14: National Potato Chip Day

Today is National Potato Chip Day 2011! Potato Chips have been around for hu
ndreds of years and is arguably the #1 snack in America! Everybody seems to
love some variation of potato chip. If you prefer BBQ, sour cream and onion,
cheddar, or just the regular plain salted chip, there are literally hundred
s of chips to choose from!
Potato chips were first invented, or made, in 1853 and as the story has it,
they may have been created been accident!
Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt was dining at the Moon’s Lake Lodge while va
cationing in New York. Vanderbilt kept sending his fried potatoes back to th
e kitchen because he said they were too thick and not crunchy enough.
The chef at the time was Native American George Crum. Chef Crum decided that
he would cut them into very thin slices, then boil them in oil, fry them, s
alt them up, and send them back to the Commodore as a joke.
The joke was on Chef Crum, as he didn't realize at the time but he just inve
nted one of America's most requested snack treats in history!
Go out and grab your favorite type of potato chips and celebrate National Po
tato Chip Day! And don't forget to think of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt a
nd Chef George Crum while you are enjoying your tasty snack!
