我捐过东西，但是从来没用上过，这个需要报itemized deduction才能免税的，不是每
个人都用得到这个。。

this will not save you much. There is a guideline on tax website on how much
you can deduct as donated item.
You need to have donation receipt and the guideline will tell you:
one piece of clothes, probably 50c-$2
one big TV, probably $5-10
etc.
Only donate cash might have some effect. e.g., donate $100 in cash and get a
receipt and claim it on your schedule A.

如果你们报州税的表也有捐东西抵tax的选项，就相对简便快捷有效的多了

in the forms I've seen, there's no difference between used and new donated
item. from my memory, only donating cash, or probably donating a car will
make some difference. And if you are hit by AMT, no difference at all.
