我小时候煮面条，一般先把预留的排骨汤和其他耐煮的料煮开，再丢入面条，等面条软
熟后加青菜。后来发现周围的朋友全是汤料一锅，面条另一锅，面条煮软后用冷水过两
遍再放入汤锅。仔细看超市卖的面条的说明，也是这么煮，可这样费时费事还不好吃，
为什么都这么做？是不是面条加了什么添加剂，要过冷水后才能把这些东西去除？

(7 letters with 2 independent)。我那个时候用了一个local的律师，真是帮得很少
水平有限。所以这次决定自己动手。
Claimed: Contribution (including media report), authorship, review, and
critical role in a famous organization

心得:
1）在本版上学习的几个月让我受益匪浅，把大家提到的十八般兵器都用上了。特别感
谢shhyoung的 sample letter. I followed his/her every detail and even the
color scheme. 那个算杂志top percentage 的方法特别有用。不过我没用SAS，只是在
JCR上把几千个journal按5-year impact factor 排序，然后用rank除以总数罢了。差
不多在1%就算top 1%，IF 7，8 的就算top 5%。
2）一直在犹豫要不要claim工作的 critical role. I carefully read the new USCIS
guideline last month. http://www.nafsa.org/uploadedFiles/InterimKazarianGuidance.pdf 觉得在工作中虽然不是老板，但claim critical role 还是可行的。“The evidence must establish that the alien has been a leader or has somehow contributed in a way that is of significant importance to the outcome of the organization or establishment’s activities. A supporting role may be considered “critical” if the alien’s performance in the role is (or was) important in that way.” 找到年终评语，job description，上面都有 critical 的字样。另外一个重点在于“the organization or establishment must be recognized as having a distinguished reputation” 找了各种网页和评论来证明这个问题。
3）Final Merits Determination 其实就是要总结前面几条里的闪光点。与其让IO自己
去找，不如我们明明白白地写出来。所以在最后总结了两条。It is very simple but
important:
A. I have established myself as one of the very top research scientists in
my field of endeavor
闪光点1,2,3,...要突出top 的字眼
B. I have received sustained national or international acclaim and
recognition for achievements in my field of expertise
用citation, review, independent letters (both from other countries) to
emphasize "sustained" and "international"

我最近想移栽从种子发芽的腊梅苗，它们现在才5英寸高。基于我这里的气候，现在以
后也只能把它们盆栽了，然后放在半荫处。现在有个疑问：我是直接把它们给移到大盆
里好呢？还是先移到半大的盆里好？

趁新鲜写点儿，我对相机品牌型号感情都不太深，唯一有点儿曲折的故事可能就是富士
的645系列傻瓜相机。
第一次见到一台富士645，还是在周密家里参观他的相机收藏，其中有台GA645zi，当时
他用的比较多，说这相机闪光同步够快，可以把白天照成黑夜。当时这台相机远远超出
我的经济能力，我对器材也没有什么向往，只是觉得很新鲜。我的第一台中幅相机是妹
妹送的Holga，拿盒里自带的胶卷拍了一卷儿，颜色真的很不错，可惜那次胶卷送出去
洗了快一个月，从此留下了“中幅胶片不好洗”的印象，就有一年没有再考虑中幅的问
题。

过了一两年，在湾区著名的旧相机市场上，再一次碰到富士645，这次是前面有个保险
杠的GS645s，正好我旁边有个姑娘看我拿起它来，说：“这相机真不错，你应该买一个
”，她手里拿着一套Bronica RF645正要付钱，谁知道她是不是托儿呢，反正我当时就
差点也跟着付钱了，建议大家如果要摆摊卖相机学学这招。
当然我后来还是等回家在网上买了一个，新相机到的正是时候，这年秋天同事送了我一
张内华达沙漠Burning Man艺术

The fresh-soft Korean noodle we bought says it has 1 year to expire. I am
sure that means they added a lot of "good" stuff to make sure it can stay in
eatable condition for a year.

过冷水是为了把表面的一些散面冲掉，防止粘成团和汤变浑。要说添加剂，都是均匀混
合在面里，怎么冲也冲不完啊。

我们家一直都是汤料一锅，面单独煮。妈妈爸爸从我记事起都是这样子。我们比较喜欢
吃卤面，就是有卤子，很少做汤面，所以基本上都是分开的。

冷冻的一般比较好没有防腐剂。可以室温保存的都是有防腐剂的成分表上都很清楚。

我这里9a沙漠。不想让它下地有2原因，一个是天很热，再个就是没适合的地方了，院
子基本种满了。我想放在盆里，可以根据情形方便移动。接下来，我也想弄些盆栽。已
经买了很多盆了。
上次看过你秀腊梅苗，印象还深着。你育活2棵，对吧？什么时候上个片片看吧。

我们这里夏天如火烤啊。好不容自己培育的种苗，比较珍惜些，想好好护养它。你的信
息太重要了，我以后都会在盆栽层面上放点mulch保湿。

就是习惯问题呀。我lg就喜欢这样的，因为他们家从小就这样。我就吃不下这样的，因

你的其它三条太强了。所以没有critical role的申请，也是能过的。如果你要靠criti
cal role来满足三条，你这个思路还是比较悬的。但是呢，因为你现在其它三条满足，
uscis又搞两步法，这个时候说点critical role 我觉着说不定对总体印象有一定加分。

才5英寸高? 我建议先移到半大(2-3加仑)的盆里比较好, 等长大时再移栽一次到大盆.
现在若盆过小, 湿度较不稳定, 空间也不够根系发展. 盆过大则搬动费事.
腊梅若妥善修剪, 可以变成极美的盆栽.

有人问到critical role具体怎么写的。我把大概的格式放在这。也许象superant说的
，这项有点悬，但我想至少证明我现在和今后都要在这里工作，这样另外一条IO在RFE
里常问的“prove that you will continue to work in your field in the US” 就
水到渠成了。

说明正在进行的研究nationally有多么重要。引用老板们的推荐信。

说明我的学术背景是这个工作特别需要的。这个unique的字样在我的position
description中有。
4.I am playing a critical role in the projects carrying out in my lab
position description 中有lead, critical的字眼，都用上。注意一定要有“成就”
的描述，USCIS强调要在有outcome的activity中起关键作用. 再用老板们的推荐信来加
强可信度。
最后提到my performance evaluation. 我恰好有老板的评语，其中有critical,
exceptional。highlight一下作为结束语。
这一项费了我很多心思，写了将近五页，最后应该还是有点用吧。谢谢了！
