Hello,
I have been using Point & shoot for long time, and plan to buy DSLR camera
in coming months (not rush, can wait). So, I am a new member for DSLR and
would like your recommendation.
My budget for the camera body is about $1000 with HD (720p /1080p) movie
function. The camera would mainly for kid and family pictures.
Planning to use similar lens (either Nikon / Canon) from "Canon EF 85mm f/1.
8 USM Medium Telephoto Lens" which it has a very good review with pictures
showing online. I am not sure T3i is good fit to this lens, or any Nikon
cameras and lens with better performance vs budget.
I am new to this forum, please clear of the camera model without "slang" is
appreicated.
Thank you your sincere reading of my post and recommendation in advance.
Tom.

Hi Tom, the current breed of DSLRs do not have follow focus when taking
video. The short run of focus rings designed for faster AF in still
photography makes the lenses harder to use in video. IMO the DSLR video
function at this stage is only for experiments and in special situations (
such as you do not have to change focus or panning). If you truly want to
use DSLR to replace a video camera you might need to invest $2k to $20k more
in accessories.
In other words I recommend you do not concentrate too much on video
capabilities when selecting DSLRs. It is more of a nice-to-have feature at
most.

Hello Kurutoga,
Understand. After your comment, my future DSLR camera is focus on picture
quality, esp. at in-door because of the poor performance of Point and Shoot.
Could you recommend the camera in my budget but still nice to have movie
feature?
Thank you.

I am the wrong person to ask this. But if I were you I would pick among a
new Canon 60d, a new 600d, and a second hand/refurbished 5d2 because I have an
existing set of canon lenses and am not familiar with other brands of bodies.
