Many recalls don't cover entire vehicle lineups. Even when a recall says it
covers two years' worth of cars, it may only apply to cars built at a
certain plant or between specific dates. Mazda's latest recall, however,
applies to an entire run. One might even call it a...total recall.
The Japanese automaker issued a recall covering every 2014-2016 Mazda CX-5
crossover. In the US, this amounts to nearly 265,000 vehicles. There is also
a stop-sale on every unsold CX-5 currently at a dealership.
The issue stems from the filler pipe that connects the fuel port to the tank
itself. A rear-end collision might rupture the pipe, which could then begin
leaking fuel. Worst-case scenario, a fuel leak near a spark source could
result in a fire. Thus far, Mazda has not heard of any accidents or injuries
related to this issue.
While the fix is not yet under way, the automaker will offer a free loaner
or rental car to owners who don't feel comfortable driving their CX-5s.
