a friend is interviewing for Broadcom's principal Engineer and Cisco's
Technical leader position, the interviews went well and both may make him
offer.
he want to know which of these 2 posistion is relatively higher? more
prestigious? and assuming he get offer from both, which he should take?
2 job functions are similar, network management software. MS with 7 years
related experience.

your friend must be 牛人. 一般来说 MS with 7 year experience 不会给那么
senior的position.

I think DELL is doing fine. They don't pay less than Broadcom for R&D engineers, considering the tax difference between CA and TX.

我朋友的朋友讲思科的tech leader比broadcom的principal级别高不少。
你的朋友看看offer的工资就知道了。
tech lead 14万起，principal 13万起。

所以同一个人可以拿CISCO的TECH LEAD，却只能到B做principal说明B的门槛高啊

我不是说待遇，我是说商业模式。DELL基本就是组装，没有任何技术含量

技术含量高的目的不是待遇好么？待遇没优势技术含量高有什么意义？DELL做的很多network, data center之类的solution，不觉得比broadcom技术含量低。
很多老中都对芯片这个东西有种莫名的崇拜，也不知道是什么原因，大概就因为中国做的少，就觉得牛B。但是如果芯片真有那么牛B, 他们应该卖的很贵才是。事实上不是那样的。
曾经很多大公司都是可以产芯片的, 而且是EDA到foundry全套流程，不像现在公司都只做一块。现在象Broadcom这样的fabless公司，离开了EDA, 离开了foundry, 它至少也要几年抓瞎，什么core不core的technology. 这个东西不是rocket science, 没有那么神秘，那些大公司后来芯片部门的去留都是成本收益的取舍，跟技术含量没太大关系。这期间出现了一些做大了的芯片公司，但是整个芯片行业应该是consolidate了。

It's just Broadcom
Broadcom title is more or less bloated;
Also Yahoo ... I see many ppl in Yahoo got PE title very very quickly
To me, Yahoo PE more like Staff in other corps;
and Broadcom PE more like Senior Staff in other corps

tech lead ask for at least 18W base,
principal ask for at least 20W base

Update: got verbal offers from both, one said he need agree to accept the
offer before they can fedex him the official written offer, the other will
give him right away.
B's package is around 15K more than C's. he think he will take B's.

看来不同公司级别差别还是挺大，好像Samsung的PE也是Director级别。

现在想有用么？看见数字再说拉，如果只有一个，你现在想也是白想。如果待遇差的很
多现在想也是白想。
如果很接近，到时候再想不迟。
