第一封信我写 I am very interested in your research in area. I wonder
whether you can offer me an opportunity to work with you. 然后介绍自己的情况
。
对方回信，I'm not quite clear on what you have in mind in terms of
collaborative work. Would this be in the nature of research, or
presenting a conference paper, or some such? ……I'd be happy to hear a bit
more about the nature of the collaboration you have in mind.
我是想申请个博士后或访问学者什么的，让对方能给点资助。我应该怎么答复他呢？实在
没辙，self-support 也可以。我是文科的。来这里时间太短，实在不知怎么应付。请教
各位。

make clear that you need an opportunity to obtain a postdoc/visiting scholar
position, not "work with you". Maybe that confused him.
Do not be shy. Make everything clear. Otherwise just waste time and effort.
After a long detour, nothing might work if you do not clarify everything at
the beginning.
