在那个年代还没有“科幻小说”这个类别，直到一百年后人们说，它就是科幻
小说的开山鼻祖。在这一百多年的时间里，小说被太多次地拍成电影、舞台剧
等各种表演形式，在绝大部分情况下，它都未能逃脱“恐怖电影”这一仿佛是
必然的命运。对读者来说，简单地称之为“哥特小说”也许不失方便和贴切。
它的出名被认为是因为作者的身世。因为作者的父亲母亲都是出名的文人，
并且更为出名的是她的丈夫，举世闻名的著名诗人。在这么多名人的包围
下，它作为作者唯一流传后世的作品，却是写作于１９岁少女之手这个事实，
直到现在还是被广为流传的佳话。
关于它的副标题，也是值得津津乐道的话题。“现代的prometheus”，这同
作者丈夫的诗歌《prometeus unbounded》有什么关联？是否后发表的那个
有受到先者的提示？不过这一些答案并不重要了，因为作者１９岁时的初版
中，小说里的叙说者固然是那个prometheus般的破禁忌者，而小说实际上的
主人公却是三个人，而且小说主题也同prometheus的神话或寓意没什么
联系。也许这

Ha! Frankenstein is the first English novel I read in middle school! It's an
unexpected start for a kid to get fond of English classics. Afterwards I came
to know Shelley the Poet; my instant reaction was wooh! so this guy was my
favorite sci fic's author's husband, even though he was in fact much more
famous and achieved! Lol, a childish way to recognize a well-known poet. I
have ever wondered in this bbs when people looked backward and talked about
favorite youthhood books in nostalgia and

the Frankenstein I read in high school was a shorted and rewritten edition,
probably edited form the 1832 version of this book. The one I am talking about
is the 1818 edition of Frankenstein, which is very worthy of reading
even if you have known the basic plots of it.
