苏童的语言有时候有点各涩，不是很流畅，有点故弄玄虚的味道，好像是为难过而难
过，为悲哀而悲哀一样，不知道你们感觉怎样？
我就看过十九间房和妻妾成群，还
有一个“我的帝王生涯”不知道是不是他写的。尤其是那个十九间房吧，看完以后
不是不悲伤的，就是老觉得悲伤不到地方，好像想使劲悲一悲又悲不起来一样，不
大痛快。：(

我看过“妻妾成群”和“米”，他的文字很压抑，而且确实有点故弄玄虚，不大喜欢。

喜欢苏童的《少年血》和《城北地带》。还记得自己是在公共汽车上看完
《刺青时代》的，从此记住了香椿树街。《妻妾成群》也还不错。
苏童的语言是有些特别，我总觉得这和他是南方人有关系。余华就提到过，
书面语是北方的语言，当他坐下来写小说的时候，才发现自己的方言突然
变成了一堆错别字。幸好汉语是灵活的，他将南方的节奏和气氛注入北方
的语言之中，于是故乡的面貌在异乡的语言中栩栩如生了。

感觉少年血和城北地带很灰色，看了以后让人感觉很压抑，
我还是很久以前看得了，留下的印象就是城乡交接地区，无所事事
的少年。。。对香椿树街的印象也是挺深的。

我不是很喜欢苏童，脏
莫言也脏，但是他的乡土气中有些比较沉的东西

格拉斯的锡鼓不知是不是也出于这个原理 :D

Perhpas yes. But Su Tong wrote in a more merciless way. : D
BTW, that professor of Notre Dame really translated Su's works so well. I felt
the fiction's tongue so much stronger in English.

read this article in the New Yorker. i doubt John Updike has ever read the two
novels. it seems that he did not even scratch the surface. and how much he
knows about China?

it burns my bacon to see he judged the books by their translations only, made
no secret of it, and the benefit of doubt was only there for decorative
purpose.
it just didn't work well as a book review.

He can only read them in English since he does not know Chinese. Since you
write so well, why do not you submit a counter argument to New Yorker? Don't
forget to pay me for this idea if you are accepted. I admire you! : )

我比较土，看了John Updike的一些短篇小说，实在没看出好在哪里。那位高手能不能解
释一下，他为什麽这麽大名气？

Since >95% of New Yorker readers can't read novels in Chinese, it's pointless
for the reviewer (whoever he/she is) to elaborate on the subtleties in the
original language.
The requirement would be very different if, for example, the review appears on
a journal about Translation or Oriental Studies.

i don't require or expect any elaboration on the language subtleties. i'd like
to see mr. updike steer clear of the murkey water: are these authors really
bold in inventing flashy stentences in their novels, or is the translator
tweaking
them too weirdly. if he doesn't know the language well/ not interested/not
trying
to bore the audience, then don't make it a notable item in that review about
flashy sentences and weird words. there is too much catering to the audience
here than one would have l

碰上一贯比较可靠的译者，风格不至于和原文差太多吧。
Updike的评价"morbid fantasia wears an opaque lacquer of willful elegance"
和我自个早年看苏童同学“飞越我的枫杨树故乡"的印象还是挺接近的。

lol, you and i are thinking about different sections in that review.
i did notice the word willful... quite a palatable word, isn't it...
better than, simply, deliberate. :B

我倒觉得他讲的还算到位，内容介绍为主，评论不多，但是比较中的。就是
时刻不忘联系政治很让人厌烦。最后一句什么中国人有自由言论机会了但是
还不敢用什么的，一下子把我恶心坏了。

我当年看完了苏童的小说感觉就是头晕目眩，想吐，不舒服。
Updike的这个评价还是很到位的。
苏童的趣味，很成问题。不过的确很真实。

不知道他这句评价是给苏童的哪部小说，如果是《我的帝王生涯》到不错，但
如果是给《少年血》等等前期香椿街系列作品，我看是不恰当的。病态的阴郁
去描述病态的社会以及病态的成长并不失真，也没有故意的精巧，一个个歪歪
斜斜地生长着的枝丫，并且不断有夭折的危险，在阳光之下，铁路以西，顿显
茫然和荒谬。苏童描写的是过去，但就是永恒的形象，是生于七十年代的故事，
如果我们尚且不可理解，不可感动，外国人就不用提了。

You are right. He used it on Su Tong's fiction called 'my life as an emperor'.
Also there's long description of that fiction.
