Contract Duration: Contracts are for three (3) years. At the end of the
three year term, contracts are renewable subject to the agreement of both
parties. Renewed contracts are “open”. That is, an open contract does not
have a fixed end date.
Teaching Load and Vacation: AUD operates on the semester system, where we
offer two semesters (Fall and Spring, each being 15 weeks in duration) as
well as two summer sessions.
Faculty duties as per contract are 40 hours per week. Faculty are expected
to teach four courses per semester. Each class meets weekly for three hours,
totaling 12 hours of teaching time per week. Faculty are requested to
reserve a further 10 hours per week for advising, counseling and meeting
with students, and the other 18 hours per week are for your own preparation,
grading, etc. With the exception of weekends and public holidays, all days
are considered working days.
Faculty members also have the option of teaching in one of the two summer
sessions. The summer sessions are each 7 weeks in duration. Should you
decide to teach in one of the summer sessions, you would be teaching two
courses (note: the timings of courses are a little different in the summer
and will amount to over 12 hours of teaching time per week). The 10 hours
per week for advising, counseling and meeting with students would also apply.
Faculty opting to teach two semesters and one summer will receive a total of
two months’ vacation: one month as vacation and the other month to be used
for professional development, research or vacation. Faculty who choose to
teach the two semesters only will get an additional (approximately) six
weeks off on top of the two months as vacation.
Benefits (financial and others) for this position are described below:
1) Basic Salary: Should you decide to teach the two semesters and one summer
session, the remuneration will be US $50,000.00 (tax free) per annum and
you will also receive a Special School of Business Compensatory Allowance of
USD 6,000.00 per year. Should you elect to teach the two semesters only,
you will be compensated at US $42,500.00 (tax-free) per annum and you will
also receive a Special School of Business Compensatory Allowance of USD 5,
000.00 per year. Salary is to be paid in twelve equal monthly installments
in the local currency of Dirhams (AED). As you may know, the AED is fixed
to the US $, where one US dollar = AED 3.66.
2) Accommodation: Housing units are allocated based upon qualifying
factors such as family size. Since you will be moving to Dubai with your
wife and two daughters, you will be provided with a 2 bedroom apartment. All
apartments, whether on or off-campus, are located in prime residential
areas that take into account the need for a family-oriented lifestyle.
Buildings chosen by AUD include facilities such as round the clock security,
fitness centers and/or swimming pool and playing areas for children.
All apartments have bedrooms fitted with built-in wardrobes and domestic
appliances (e.g. washing machine / dryer, refrigerator, cooker).
Household goods/personal effects may also be shipped to Dubai for an amount
not to exceed $3K. Should the employee decide not to ship anything, the $3K
will be given upon arrival in Dubai as a cash disbursement. You may use
this to buy furniture for the apartment (e.g. beds, bedside tables, dressing
tables, sofas, dining room table and chairs, drapes, etc.).
3) Utilities: Valued at $3,500.00 per annum, electricity and water costs are
taken care of by AUD. Internet services are free of charge on-campus only.
An internet allowance of AED 250.00 per month is provided for off-campus
residents. Telephone services and cable television are not included in the
package. Non-continuing faculty are required to vacate their assigned
housing units two weeks from the end of the last academic session in which
they are teaching.
4) Air tickets: To join the university, AUD will provide you, your spouse
and your 2 resident dependents (age up to 22 years) with one-way economy
class airline tickets to Dubai. Furthermore, for every completed year of
service you, your spouse and your 2 resident dependents (age up to 22 years)
will each receive one round-trip airline ticket to use during your annual
vacation (destination to be determined at the point of hire).
5) Medical Insurance: You, your spouse and dependents are entitled to join
the current medical insurance plan offered by AUD, where the University pays
50% of your monthly premiums and you pay the remaining 50%. Dental and
Ophthalmology are not covered.
You are also entitled to participate in the University’s Life insurance
plan, where the University pays 50% of your monthly premiums and you pay the
remaining 50%.
6) Repatriation: Upon completion of the contract, you, your spouse and your
2 resident dependents (age up to 22 years) will receive one-way airline
tickets for the purposes of repatriation, (as well as a maximum shipping
allowance of US $3,000.00. This is not a cash disbursement; shipping
allowance is paid directly to the shipping company hired to relocate the
personal effects.)
7) Gratuity: Employees are entitled to an end of service (gratuity)
amounting to 21 days per year of service. In the event that the employment
contract is terminated before the expiry date, no gratuity is payable.
8) Professional Organizations/Development:
a) For professional employees and where appropriate, the University
agrees to provide membership fees for up to two professional organizations
per year at a total cost of $200 each.
b) AUD encourages faculty to attend international and local conferences
/seminars/workshops.
9) Annual leave: The Employee is entitled to a total of two months (44
workdays) of combined annual leave and release time for professional
development per completed year of service. These two months are split as
follows: one calendar month (22 workdays) annual leave (vacation) and one
additional calendar month (22 workdays) release time.
10) Educational Assistance: AUD provides its employees with educational
assistance for school tuition fees. Payment is limited to fees for classes
from Nursery through Grade 12 (or equivalent of grade 12). The University
contributes 75% towards school tuition fees up to a maximum contribution of
AED 30,000.00 per year (per child) for a maximum of two children (AED 60,000
.00/family/academic year).
Allowances and benefits shall not be provided to the employee where such
allowances or benefits are already or become available to the employee
through the employment of the Employee's spouse in the U.A.E.
