Job description
The Fuel and Cladding Materials Division at State Nuclear Power Research
Institutes (SNPRI) has Staff Scientist openings in the area of inorganic
crystal growth. The successful applicant will join the Fuel Material
Development & Characterization team and participate in a multidisciplinary
research effort aimed at the growth of high-purity single crystals for novel
Nuclear fuel applications. The ideal candidate has demonstrated expertise
in single-crystal growth using high temperature melt techniques such as cold
crucible, Czochralski and Bridgman, inorganic synthetic chemistry, and
characterization of solids using X-ray diffraction, optical spectroscopy,
and electron microscopy. Selected candidates will be expected to work
independently on a defined research project and as part of a
multidisciplinary research team. Candidates will be expected to implement
their products to the advanced nuclear energy system, and to disseminate
their results through patents (if applicable), peer-reviewed journal
publications, and conference presentations.
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated experience with the design, setup, and operation of furnaces
for single-crystal growth such as cold crucible, Czochralski and Bridgman;
Demonstrated experience with the design and construction of resistive and RF
heated furnaces as well as the implementation of computer-controlled
crystal-growth systems;
Demonstrated experience with X-ray diffraction
Demonstrated ability as an innovative experimentalist with a broad range of
experience in experimental design, experimental equipment design/development
, and a wide range of structural and optical characterization techniques;
Demonstrated ability to perform as an effective member of a
multidisciplinary team conducting scientific work;
Demonstrated ability to work independently;
Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and concisely in English, both
orally and in writing;
Demonstrated record of reliability and versatility;
Demonstrated competency with computers and software applications for word
processing, data processing (e.g., Excel/Origin/IGOR/Matlab), and data
visualization;
Demonstrated experience with NI LabView data acquisition and control
software and hardware.
Desired Skills:
Demonstrated experience in working with radioactive materials;
Demonstrated experience with the synthesis of anhydrous metal fluorides and
the associated glovebox techniques;
Demonstrated experience with optical spectroscopy (UV/VIS, FTIR) and
electron microscopy;
Demonstrated high-level skills in the design, assembly, maintenance,
troubleshooting, and operation of furnace, mechanical, and vacuum systems;
Demonstrated experience in preparing mechanical drawings;
Education: A Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials
Engineering, Materials Science, or related technical field completed within
the last five years or soon to be completed. Thesis work with emphasis in
single-crystal growth preferred.
