I wonder if this is actually hardware specific. I want to
monitor the number of computers connected to my wireless
router. The software vendor provided does not provide it.
Is there any general purpose software for this?

most wireless routers' management suite( usually login via web page) can do
this, so an administrator may see how many clients connected in, and their
IP addresses, MAC addresses, etc.
If you're in trouble for unauthorised user, I recommend you turn on the MAC
address filter, and configure it as only authorised wireless card may
connect.
