It is probably because NLY is a mortgage REIT. I have been holding onto VNQ for quite a while. I enjoy the ride so far. For me, investing in REIT is just a highly liquid method of investing in the real estate market of the US.

mREITs are good for holding, not for trading.

That is right. If the economy is bad the government will boost the real estate market; if the economy turns good, real estate will do good itself. I owned SPG, BXP and PSA (stocks & options). My account value increase 40+% YTD.
