Rep. Brady Tells Fed's Bernanke QE2 May Backfire
By Luca Di Leo, Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES
WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- A House Republican said Friday he's concerned the
Federal Reserve's expected move to buy more government bonds to spur the
economy may backfire.
In a letter to Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke, Kevin Brady (R., Texas) said the
risk of much higher inflation down the road from a new round of bond
purchases, also known as quantitiative easing, "far exceeds the potential
reward" of a small boost to growth.
The U.S. economy continued to grow at a modest pace in the third quarter as
consumer spending perked up, but growth remains too weak to cut unemployment
any time soon.
Despite opposition from even a minority of officials at the U.S. central
bank, the Fed is widely expected to announce a new plan to buy U.S. Treasury
bonds when its next policy-setting meeting ends Nov. 3. That's the day
after the midterm elections, in which Republicans are expected to gain
control of the House.
Brady, a candidate to chair a key congressional trade committee if the
Republicans win, said he's worried the Fed is embarking on an "unwise policy
" to offset the drag on the economy created by wrong policies put forward by
a Democratic Congress and President Barack Obama.
"The newly elected Congress should have the opportunity to change these anti
- growth policies before the Federal Reserve resorts to quantitative easing,
" the Congressman wrote.
