Nokia Names Sebastian Nystroem as New Head of MeeGo Development

Nokia Oyj, the world’s largest maker of mobile phones, appointed Sebastian
Nystroem to take charge of its MeeGo
team, replacing Alberto Torres who left the company last month.
Nystroem will be in charge of putting out a handset running the Linux-based
operating system this year, Peter
Schneider, Nokia’s head of MeeGo marketing, wrote on the MeeGo blog.
Chief Executive Officer Stephen Elop announced Feb. 11 that the company will
scale back its MeeGo program and use
Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 as its main smartphone software. Intel Corp. (
INTC) and the Linux Foundation are also
involved in developing on the MeeGo platform.

LONDON -- Shares of Nokia Corp. rose 2.4% in morning trading Wednesday in
Helsinki. The world's largest maker of mobile phones, which has struggled of
late, was upgraded to market perform from underperform by Bernstein analyst
Pierre Ferragu late Tuesday. The broker said that while it maintains a
cautious outlook on Nokia, "given the acceleration of market share losses
and gross margin decline, and the risk of a poor outcome of the partnership
with Microsoft Corp. ," it believes the company could meet current low
expectations in the short term. Ferragu noted that 2011 earnings
expectations for the firm have fallen from 67 cents on the eve of its fourth
-quarter results to 47 cents a share today.
