Chief Justice John Roberts Jr., an appointee of former President George W.
Bush who often has sided with the conservatives on the court in close cases,
sided with the more liberal wing this time and proved to be the decisive
vote.
There is some irony in the turn of events. As a US senator in 2005, Obama
voted against Roberts’s confirmation. Now Roberts has handed Obama one of
the biggest victories of his political life.
By maintaining the status quo, the Supreme Court has given Republicans in
Congress a fresh rallying point, as they have vowed to continue their fight
to legislatively repeal the sweeping law. But with the conservative-leaning
court affirming the government’s power to intervene aggressively in the
national healthcare market, the GOP faces a difficult path.
很明显Chief Justice John Roberts Jr这个时候放水，是共和党大老们沙盘推演后的
结果。如果这个时候推翻O8care，表面上固然是共和党赢了，但对共和党的选情毫无益
处。铁杆保守派无非是高兴一阵子，该投共和党票的自然还是投共和党票。但是强行阻
止医保改革毕竟不易占领道德高点，显得不那么“高尚”，会触怒一批中间选民，尤其
是那些普屎上脑的知识分子。结果是把中间派推向民主党，顺便还激发liberals们的斗
志。想反的，防水O8care对共和党来说是以退为进，既可以避免中间派的流失，还可以
继续不断用这个议题发挥刺激保守派的选情。
堂堂民主大国的医保法案，事关亿万人的福祉乃至生命安全，这么重大的议题，某些人
却能随意放弃自己的一贯立场，将其牺牲去做辅选的工具，可见民主游戏的荒谬。
