Alcatel-Lucent Secures EUR1.62B Financing

PARIS--Alcatel-Lucent (ALU.FR) Friday said it secured a 1.62 billion euros (
$2.12 billion) new financing from Credit Suisse (CS) and Goldman Sachs (GS)
to grant more time to the money-losing telecom-equipment company to return
to profitability.
The company will use the proceeds of the new financing line to extend the
maturity of existing debt over "several years", its Chief Executive Ben
Verwaayen said in a statement, adding the deal gives the company's more room
to carry out a EUR1.25 billion cost-cutting plan.
The company confirmed a report released by the Wall Street Journal late
Thursday.
The new debt, which will have maturities from three-and-a-half to six years,
will be backed by Alcatel-Lucent's intellectual property portfolio.
The new debt deal may catch Alcatel-Lucent investors by surprise. Recent
reports suggested the company would raise more like EUR1 billion, and people
familiar with the matter had said the deal wasn't likely to be completed
this year. Together with existing cash it has on hand, the deal will enable
Alcatel-Lucent to pay off two to three years worth of debt maturities.
Even though the telecom equipment company, which booked negative cash flow
for years, still has ample cash on hand, it needs a bigger cushion to
reassure customers and investors. Pressure on Alcatel-Lucent is rising after
the company's share price plummeted following disappointing results. The
company's debt was recently downgraded by Moody's Investors Service and its
shares were excluded from the benchmark CAC-40 index effective on Dec. 24.
