Microsoft's Potential External Candidates to Succeed CEO Ballmer# Stock

With Chief Executive Steve Ballmer retiring within the year, Microsoft Corp.
(MSFT) said it also will consider external candidates for the spot, in
addition to those inside the company.
Some analysts think it's more likely the company will choose an outside
choice.
"We think the company is in need of a cultural change to increase
collaboration between different product lines and foster faster innovations,
which is the key focus of its recently announced reorganization," Janney
analysts Yun Kim and Alice Hur said. "We think an outsider will have a far
better chance of executing this plan than an insider."
Here are some of the possible external successors for Mr. Ballmer, most of
whom have executive experience at Microsoft:
Stephen Elop, president and chief executive of Nokia Corp. (NOK, NOK1V.HE):
Mr. Elop joined Nokia in September 2010 and, about six months later, formed
a wireless partnership with Microsoft. He is a former president of Microsoft
's business division and member of the senior management team that was in
charge of the company's strategy. On Friday, he released a statement calling
Mr. Ballmer an "inspirational leader."
Tod Nielsen, chief executive of salesforce.com (CRM) unit Heroku: Before
taking over at Heroku, Mr. Nielsen was chief operating officer at VMware Inc
. (VMW) and spent 12 years at Microsoft in development and platform
leadership roles.
Paul Maritz, chief executive of Pivotal, a spinoff of data storage and cloud
computing company EMC that is composed of units focused on enterprise
software: Formerly VMware's CEO, Mr. Maritz was a leading executive at
Microsoft during the 1990s, when he oversaw Windows and Internet Explorer
development.
Sanjay Jha, former chairman and chief executive of Motorola Mobility and co-
CEO of Motorola: He resigned from Motorola after Google Inc. (GOOG) acquired
Motorola last year.
Blake Irving, chief executive of Go Daddy: Mr. Irving has been in the top
spot at the Web domain hosting company since January. He spent 15 years at
Microsoft, where he led the creation of the company's global online services
among other initiatives. He also served as chief product officer at Yahoo
Inc. (YHOO).
