Indeed a silly question... Retail stores advertise hot holiday gift items at
great discount with EXTREMELY LIMITED availability to get/fool shoppers
into their stores hoping they will buy something else... the oldest trick in
their book. Those promotions are not endorsed by Apple and the retailers
themselves pay for the promotional cost. Apple itself is never generous
with its promotional offers, usually it's a $50 itune gift card.

以前是这样，每个店只能拿到非常有限的配额的inventory.但是去年情况有改变。去年
Thanksgiving的时候， Target的local实体店和网站都从Apple拿到了相当多的货源，
用于Thanksgiving的送GC的promotion.

oh, i have no doubt that apple can provide these stores with adequate supply
... it really comes down to how much competition there is among bestbuy/
target/walmart etc., and how much these retailers are willing to spend to
get shoppers into their stores. But it was never a losing situation for
Apple.

应该说是Apple的市场地位有所改变吧。在教主时代，是从来都没有这样的事情的。
Cook上台以后，明显比教主更愿意去迎合花街。

It's more of a change in its marketing strategy as the smartphone market
saturates in the US -- almost half of the smartphones sold in US are iphones
. And I somehow feel Cook is a better choice for today's Apple. After all,
Cook was hand-picked by Jobs. Jobs's attitude is basically --- F*** off, i
do whatever I wish. I still remember watching Steve Jobs threw a microphone
to the floor and walked out on a live on-air CNBC interview. But in reality,
for a public-traded company of this size, you just can't behave in that an
immature way anymore. Besides, his role in Apple's success was, to some
extent, glorified.
