This counting area - one of the referendum's biggest - was expected to come
out much more in favour of Remain. JP Morgan, one of the biggest investment
banks, expected 66.8pc of the vote for Remain. The actual margin of victory
was much smaller, with only 51pc voting to stay in.

Sunderland is not good either for Remain
61% of Sunderland's voters picked Leave, while only 39% went for Remain.
Compare that to the 46/40 predicted by political scientist Chris Hanretty or
to the 56/43 predicted by JP Morgan. This is bad news for Remainers. As
Hanretty put it, "the closer it is in Sunderland, the better it is for
Remain". And this result was not close at all.

The value of sterling dropped sharply by around 3% on the markets in an
instant reaction to the Sunderland result, as traders took on board the
possibility of a strong result for Leave.

There is another bad result for Remain in the North East. We were expecting
the Remain side to win 41% of the vote and in practice it has won just 30%.
This is the fourth example in the North East where the Remain vote is some
10 points adrift of what we were expecting if the country were heading for a
50-50 vote.

Cable: Leave vote looks increasingly likely
Former Lib Dem Business Secretary Sir Vince Cable - who backs Remain - tells
the BBC it "looks increasingly" that Leave is ahead and perhaps time to
think about the "political and economic" consequences of that.
